Special damage is a special type of damage that ignores the target's defenses.

Mechanics

Special attacks, much like Magic attacks, cannot miss nor have a chance to land a Critical hit, no matter the attribute of the attack.

However, Special damage dealt from an attack differ both from Magic and Physical attacks on two points:

  • Special damage is calculated using either the Phys ATK or Mag ATK of the demon that deals the Special attack, depending from skill to skill with no default stat. In turn, the kind of stat used by a skill is necessarily included in its description.
  • Special damage is not affected by the enemy's DEF, Mag DEF, or Damage reduction effects.

Special damage is still normally affected by stat Buff and Debuff.

Ignoring Damage reduction

On top of plainly ignoring the DEF and Mag DEF stat of the target·s, Special damage ignores any and all damage reduction effects that demons can have. Even skills and panels that reduce any kind of damage received like Lightning Beast, or that reduce damage of the appropriate attribute such as Drunken Giant against Phys and Fire attacks, are ignored.

To reiterate rule, Special damage ignores all kinds of damage reductions, and it works like that most of the time (making it simple for PVP). But there are some unique kinds of damage reduction from certain PVE areas that are the exception and cannot be ignored for the sake of balance:

  • In Alter-World, enemy elemental shields aren't ignored
  • In Battle Tower, the damage reduction of the Dx2 depending on the number of surviving ally demons isn't ignored
  • In Demon Buster Extreme+, the reduction of damage based on the difference between the level of Demon Allies and the Reference Level isn't ignored

Boosting Special damage

Increasing the damage of Special attacks is done relatively normally. It works with regular damage increasing skills such as Master Assassin, skills that increase damage dealt like Kuzunoha Spirit, or skills that increase the damage of the appropriate attribute of the skill like Phys Amp. The only damage increasing effects that do not apply are those limited to Physical damage (like Epitome of Martial Arts) or Magic damage (like Epitome of Witchcraft), those are different kinds of damage no matter the stat used for the Special attack.

  • Though effects that reduce damage received by demons do not work, because Special damage can be increased like normal, it is possible to reduce the damage received with Reverse damage boost.
