A sun god worshipped in Rome from the 1st to 4th century CE. A festival was held in his honor every winter solstice, a symbol of his alleged rebirth after death. Though hailed as a heroic god who delivers people from strife, his followers performed secret rites where they bathed in sacrificial animal blood.
